Home Depot and Hugging Hibiscus'
Its been an eventful weekend for the lawn crew (aka us) at our house! We took FULL advantage of the great weather and thought our "yard work" would be an easy, few hour job on Saturday. Friday night, we went to Home Depot (one of our SIX trips this weekend, but we thought this would be our ONLY trip) and loaded up on what we thought was enough of mulch, weed killers, and fertilizers. Saturday morning we woke up bright and early (not because of the yard, but because my husband can't sleep past 7:30 -- i swear one day I am going to have to put Ny-Quil in his water at night to get him to sleep late, but dont tell him...good thing he doesn't read the blog ;) After our usual "big saturday morning breakfast" of either b-fast tacos or sausage and biscuits for Jeremy and a waffle for me...we went down the street to Calloways and bought thestore out in flowers!
Our car looked like a flower shop! We deliver!
We got back to our house and in full long sleeves and pants got out in the yard to pull out ALL the leaves that had accumulated under the bushes...which is a VERY painful job to do and a pain in itself. Those bushes scratch you up...hints why we were dressed for winter...the long sleeves helped the brunt of the scratch. Jeremy was much better at this than I was...I held the trash bag open a lot ;) I was really good at that!
We had gotten done with all the cleaning out of the flower beds and were taking a water break when an ambulance pulled up to our neighbors house in the middle of the day! Long story short, a drill fell off a ladder and barely missed his eye but left a pretty good "scratch" on his cheek that needed 16 stitches! We kept their son while they were getting his cut taken care of at the hospital...
Wish it could have been on happier terms, but we had a blast with little Alexander!
After they got back we hit the yard again! Now the fun part....the colors!!
Finally after a few hours of bending over and digging holes, all the flowers were in and the mulch was laid.
After a really long day in the yard we had a great evening on the Patio of Cavalli's (a wood fired pizza grill by our house) with our friends Amanda and Tim, who had also been yard-ing all day!
After church Sunday we decided to tackle the back yard...which we thought would be a piece of cake after all the front yard the day before--- WRONG. We had to up-root all the plants that the previous owners had planted because they had all died. We thought we could just dig them out...also wrong. These roots were 5 inches in diameter and went to China! And yet again, we thought it couldn't get much worse. But then Jeremy tried to dig up the old hibiscus plant..........
Here is the flower bed all ready for the new plants..
The thing about this plant is that it had grown up UNDER the rock flower bed border and there was no way to get up beside it to get a shovel underneath. Also, the roots were miles long and stronger than a horse!
After about 3 hours of digging, Jeremy finally went next door and got our neighbor (yes same one that had 16 stitches the day before, but don't worry he was out working in his yard too;)
They gave it another 30 minutes and way too many grunts and sweat and finally we saw this...
An EMPTY HOLE!
But to get to that required Shane to pull and jeremy to hug this plant and push it OUT of the hole after whacking it a millions times with the shovel!
They were very proud!

We loaded the remains in the back of my plastic COVERED car and went to a creek and dumped it. GONE! Never again --- and I can't talk because i watched all this happen--- haha
Finally all the tools were cleaned up, the hole was filled and Jeremy was clean ;)
And we had a back yard with new plants!
Looks wonderful!! I'm glad that you guys got it done, and without any injuries from the devil of a hibiscus plant!
